14 days - Maple Grove Cemetery, DeTour

Real Maple Grove Cemetery 2017 Tour, stop #5 - DeTour, MI

Located in Chippewa County, in the very easternmost point of the Upper Peninsula.
A small-ish cemetery of 338 interments.

This must be one of those places where there aren't any rules as to what you can put on / around a grave.

This name shows up a lot on FindaGrave.
Captain & 1st Mate
This was a rather large fenced plot....with only 2 flush stones in the front right corner.

The wife had passed, but the husband had not.  His stone is to the left of her's, under the red flowers.   And it was all filled with picker bushes.  I was expecting to see a bunch of stones in there, but nada.
Personally - if I had a plot and my stone was already there, waiting for me.....
I'd keep it neat & trimmed.

I had trouble getting my camera to focus in this area. I could tell they were fuzzy, and took a bunch of shots using different settings, but no luck.

The next 2 are closeups of this plot.
I'd never seen a Canadian flag in a US cemetery before!

508th Airborne Regimental Combat Team
Red Devils
Their son?  Plausible.
Close up of the ship.  I was hoping to see a hull number. (I was in the Navy myself so I am always interested in those stones)
Also interesting that it just says Chief.  Usually it's BMC (Boatswain Mate, Chief Petty Officer) or something, but they don't have a rate on this stone.
The only other one of these medallions I'd seen before (also on this trip) was on the side of the stone.  I wonder if these got knocked off by the groundskeepers & tossed onto the carving?
I didn't pry at it, but when I tried to pick it up, it didn't move.
Couldn't help but notice this totem pole as soon as we pulled in.
Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians flag

2 family plots using the same stone.

I've never seen a military stone with a photo on it.
He was clearly a BAMF and I bet he had stories to tell!

  1. That is an incredible cemetery. Used to seeing the minimal fuss-and-muss rules of modern cemeteries, so this is quite unique for me to see.

  2. beautiful photos.
This place looks amazing. Funny how that one stayed blurry....
There's an old old cemetery in a tiny little town near Tucson that this one reminds me of.It's interesting to me because of the gated plots. None of the 'newer' places do that anymore.
    thanks for sharing!
