Belmont Ridge Cemetery, Flushing OH

I was playing tourist with my mom & sisters one weekend in late March and we stopped by this beautiful old cemetery (technically graveyard, since it's in a churchyard) to pay our respects.
This church is what caught my attention.  I would have loved to at least peek inside, but it was locked.
Cornerstone of the M. E. Church 1892
I bet the detail on this gable would have been lovely when it was whole.
There are 2 padlocks on the doors.
There were several grates on each side of the building for the crawlspace.
I'm sure there are a lot of critters living under there!
Peeking thru the grate into the crawl space.
A fireplace poker & bottle.

That door was suspiciously cleared of vines & growth.  But also locked.
oooooooooh!

Let's explore.
Addie M (altho Find A Grave has her as Mary Addie Cash)
wife of Edgar V. Shotwell
died May 16, 1897
aged 32 years
No pain, no grief, no anxious fear
can reach our loved one sleeping here.

this was the only zinc stone I saw.
Thomas Elwood Cash
Dec 27, 1859 - Sep 26, 1921
Laura E Hinman Cash
wife of Thomas
1861 - 1914
In memory of Alpheus
son of Bazaleel & Maria Pumphrey
who died March 25, 1837 (but the stone looks to say 1867)
aged 4 years, 2 months, 10 days.

the bottom right corner also says Jones & Rose XIV(rest is chipped off)
Eliza A Collins
Mar 23, 1843 - Aug 2, 1916

I love the carvings on her stone!
Kind of Aztec, kind of Native American, kind of semi truck...
Keziah Thwait Jackson
June 28, 1835 - April 24, 1912
Our Mother
Jackson
Arthur B 1901-85
Pauline 1903-71
the plaque is the Lord's Prayer

interesting how the names / dates aren't centered - it looks like the death years were an afterthought.
VanFossan plot
Another that looks like part of the carving was added on later.
"VanFoss" is centered on the stone so the "an" looks odd.
Find A Grave has them as "Van Fossen" and shows his death certificate as "Vanfossen".

Mary, his Wife

Zachariah Collins
April 7, 1829 - Nov 12, 1884
And a carving that looks like a Chevrolet logo 😆
Close up of Zachariah's anchor
Andrew J
infant son of Jesse & Grace Robison
Feb 12, 1924
I don't know why this stone touched me so much.
"Gone Home"
Sarah A. Winrod
Jan 1859 - Nov 15, 1886
wife of Rezin
I can't figure out whose this is - but the stone is beautifully carved, with the curtains and cording.
I can kind of make out where it says "In Memory of" and then it's chipped off "of Henby" or maybe "Henry" and you can make out parts of numbers.
I don't know if the flag actually belongs to this stone.  Looking at the legend from the County Recorder, there is a veteran Henry Stotler buried somewhat close to where I remember this one being - but his stone clearly states his name.
from the side
There had been some heavy rains & flooding right before we visited the area and there was standing water in a lot of these grave-sized hollows.
Possibly / maybe
William Reese Wood
Aug 11, 1831 - Jan 9, 1905

The stone is hard to read, but I could make out "OO" and according to the plat above - he's the only veteran with OO in his name.
But I'm not sure enough to post this picture on Find A Grave.

Manuel Gregg
died Apr 1, 1851
Aged 28 Yrs. 2 Ms & 11 Ds
Here's the detail of the top of his stone - don't judge me for thinking it looks like Charlie brown's Christmas tree, complete with ornaments!
I belong to a FaceBook page that's owned by the same person who published a book about the meanings of headstone carvings, so I went on there to ask what this could be.  Someone said they're rosebuds!  I never would have guessed.
Jane A. Bryan
1815 - Dec 16, 1877

I like the swirly carvings.
We had visitors, too.
Not sure how long these vultures had been sitting up there watching us, but they stuck around long enough to get some pictures of them!
