Welcome to Cemetery Saturday!
A few weeks ago, the Spouse and I were in Birch Run, Michigan for a wedding and had some time before the ceremony. After consulting with Find a Grave, we went to explore this little cemetery.
There's a good reason I prefer exploring smaller cemeteries - I get sucked into a rabbit hole of research when looking up their names for the post!
My usual disclaimer - I am just a tourist, I know nothing about anyone buried here, other than what is in Find A Grave. If you're looking for someone who may be buried here, check the link above.
Moving on!
I was sort of disappointed, since when we left Birch Run (approximately 15 miles away) we had heavy fog which would have great for taking pictures!
The Spouse parked across the street in a cornfield access road, since there was only a steep ditch along the shoulder in front of the cemetery.
I was impressed with how well-kept it was.
I have to assume the people at the house next door keep it mowed and trimmed so nicely.
Sarah A Russell
wife of Jonathan
died January 21, 1881
aged 55 years 11 months 21 days
I believe this may be Jonathan Russell,
The date is definitely Sept 30 and the only listing with that date is Jonathan's. There's no stone posted for him, tho so I can't compare. His listing was added in 2007, so I don't know when the note was made that he probably never had a military stone. He appears to have one now. The top emblem is "Indian War Veteran" and the bottom GAR.
I should have looked at the other side of the military stone.
There were quite a few stones mostly underground.
There's probably a lot more that aren't visible anymore.
A funky growth / nest on a leaf.
I don't even see a stone this shape in F-A-G.
Horace Hopkins
September 9, 1811 - October 17, 1876
aged 65 years 1 month 8 days
Interesting that his listing says that they haven't been able to prove that ~this~ Horace Hopkins was ever in the Civil War, even tho there's a GAR marker by his stone. Whoever made the listing believes it may be an African American Veteran named Horace Hopkins who was the vet. Stay tuned!

Served in the Blackhawk War 1832-1836
Second Seminole War 1836 - 1837

The link on his name has a much better photo of the stone taken in 2005 so you can see the photo much better.
I've never seen a military stone with a photo on it before!
