I'm on BlueSky!

I just signed up for BlueSky!
@MapleGroveCem

Having a hard time finding other Halloweeny people to follow.

It's supposed to be like the app-formerly-known-as-Twitter and it sure looks like it, too.
I read that people were leaving Twitter because they made it so when you block someone / have someone blocked - they can still see your posts, they just can't interact with you in any way.  Which kind of defeats the purpose of blocking someone!  So this is the alternative.  I personally don't have anyone blocked (I don't think so anyway....) and I don't even really use Twitter, altho my blog posts do get posted there, but I thought I'd give this a try anyway.

Woot!

28 days - Social Media plugs

Happy 2016 Countdown, folks!

I got it in my head to actually advertise the cemetery a wee bit this year.

I had a couple ideas for getting at least my Facebook page out there flit thru my mind so I went to my resident good-idea man (the hubby) for his thoughts.  He brought up a sign of sorts and after some brainstorming, this is what developed!
I'm quite happy with my bricks.
Paver bricks from Lowe's - about $2.50 for the three.
Approximately 6x6 inches.
Scrubbed & let dry for about 24 hours in the house.
A nice coat or two of DryLok.
Paint in the appropriate colors,
even tho I know the colors will be jacked up due to the red spotlight.
I printed out each of the logos and sketched them free-hand in pencil,
then filled in with paint.
FYI - the Twitter logo on your phone has less detail.

This project took a lot longer than I'd planned - it's been raining so it was humid as crap and they were taking forever to dry.  I set a fan on them and still couldn't figure out why the Instagram brick looked like it wasn't drying....I'd used gloss gray paint!  Doh!
Today ended up being pretty decent, so I sat them outside & sprayed them with a clear matte indoor / outdoor Krylon spray paint to protect the acrylics and here's how they look!

And I figured if you use that particular form of media, you'll recognize the logo.  I double checked that when you go to each of the social media pages and search for Maple Grove Cemetery, you actually do find me.

Moving right along.

Ya know, I have a beef with people who post on the Halloween Forum that they don't have the $$ to do their H'ween display this year, woe is me, woe is me.  Why can't they reuse the stuff they already have?  That should cost all of $0.  Or do they throw everything away come November??
Sheesh.  But I digress.

Anyhoo.  I've added a few new things so far.
I ordered another 4 foot skelly from the Skeleton-Factory.  It's entertaining that the family isn't even fazed that Paul is currently chilling on the couch in the living room.
I used my 55% coupon at Michael's to get the red velvet skull.
And damn if I didn't get an email today that if you're on the new Rewards Program, you have a 60% coupon!  I can't think of anything else that I want!
Joann's already has what little H'ween stuff they have out 30% off.
I got this little headstone for the kitchen cemetery.
The one I stopped at had very little out, but a lot of empty shelving with shelf plans taped to them.  I didn't see anything really exciting on the plans, but I may change my mind once I SEE it in person.
And since I've decided on a masquerade ball for the cemetery this year, I've started getting some stuff from the Salvation Army to dress the skeletons with.  I asked my Secret Reaper for masks & beads & other scraps of materials.  I refuse to spend any more than $3 per piece on these outfits, so it's kind of fun to see what I can find.  These are some fabulous scarves, tho!
I found this village piece today in with the Christmas knick-knacks!
Super cute.
I also found this reaper candle-holder.  It's hard to tell, but he's pretty happy looking.

oh, and these......this isn't all from one trip.  I've been finding these nutcrackers since the beginning of the year.  I've been avoiding "typical" nutcrackers and only getting "unique" ones.
A Royal Canadian Mountie, a bunny that will go in with the Easter stuff, an aviator and a biker holding a helmet & gloves.

Actual Christmas nutcrackers.  On the right, the average looking guy is stained & not painted so that's how he rated as "unique".  The snowman is also a candle-holder and may possibly be regifted to my sister who loves snowmen.
A postman, a gardner and a very fabulous pirate on the left.
I found this one at an antique store.  He needs a little work, maybe a new paint job and glue here & there, but is otherwise solid.  He's got that old attic smell.  I've got quite the herd of these now.

Speaking of herd.....did you see this is coming soon to a Home Depot near you???
OMG - how awesome would this be???  Over 6 feet tall (I assume they measured to the ears and not the base of the neck like a real horse)  O the possibilities!
I would LOVE to have one, but storage would be a huge issue for this.  It would be hilarious to store it in my sister's barn!  She's got 2 live horses but 3 stalls in the barn so the skeleton could have its own space!  Heehee, she would probably disagree, tho.  A photo-op for sure, but not actually storing it there.   We'd (hubby & I) have to figure out a way to rig a pulley system to get it up in the garage rafters with the rest of the skeletons.  He's great at figuring out things like that.  It won't happen this year so I hope they bring it back for 2017!

Going back to the masquerade ball idea - I discovered I had like $64 on my iTunes account and before I went nuts buying more music, I researched music for the ball.  Gots to have tunes at a ball!  I didn't want to use stuff from Midnight Syndicate or Nox Arcana.  While they are super awesome and creepy, I wanted to find music someone could actually dance to.  So I uploaded some of the usual stuff, but found some others that are pretty awesome.
Witch Doctor
Purple People Eater
Monster Mash - did you know there is an explicit version of this????
Love Potion No 9
The Addams Family Theme
This is Halloween (Marilyn Manson)
Time Warp
I Put a Spell On You (CCR)
Monster in my Pants (Fred Schneider from the B52s)
Call Me on the Ouija Board (Sharon Needles)
Dracula (Sharon Needles)
This Club is a Haunted House (also Sharon Needles)
This is only around 38 minutes, so I'll have to find at least a couple more songs.  I won't have it playing every night, but will for sure during ToT.  And I've been listening to it while painting.

I thought of another quick improvement project to do for this year.  I have a ground-breaker coffin that I made a couple years ago that needs to be aged.  There are all sorts of recipes to stain wood on Pinterest using steel wool & apple cider vinegar so that's the plan.

I'm almost done with repainting the headstones.  I've not doing a lot at a time, but tomorrow (Well, today since its after midnight) looks like it'll be decent (cloudy but not too hot and hopefully not humid) so maybe I'll get them finished up.  It'll be nice to get them put away so we can actually get into the garage!  I have the sawhorses right inside the door so they're in the way.

Time to turn in - busy painting day tomorrow!  And I should do thru some boxes in the house that are mysteriously labelled "Halloween" to see what's in them (insert Twilight Zone music)!
I can't possibly be the only one who has such things floating around, am I??

Creepmas is Coming!!

December 1 is right around the corner....that means CREEPMAS!!!

It's pretty cool that this year you have the option of using the topics provided.  My offerings aren't going to be a spooky & creepy as most - I'm going to use Rudy!  He crossed over to the jolly side when he heard they had cookies, and he's quite the goofball!

And Maple Grove Cemetery is now on Instagram!  I was using my personal one, but my everyday people probably don't want to see H'ween / cemetery stuff year round and my H'ween peoples probably don't want to see cat, dog & dance pictures.  @MapleGroveCem
I'll have the link over on the sidebar added shortly.

Ideas are starting!

I've been going about my business all summer, always with that thought in the back of my mind that I'm forgetting something.  I hadn't been putting much thought into my cemetery display this year, since there's nothing I feel needs to be built (since I finally got my fence!), it was just going to be a matter of arrangement.  I want to separate my beloved blow-molds from the rest of the cemetery.  I can't get the awesome blue & green LED spots that I've been dreaming about when it's all washed out by the neighboring ghost or pumpkin!  Pretty sure there's just gonna be a mosh pit of blowmolds in the smaller area of yard next to the driveway.  I can't imagine there being any rhyme or reason to their part of the display.  Maybe I need different height boxes or bleachers or something for them?  Hmm, something else to think about.

So anyhooo, I don't recall why I even had my phone out at the dinner table one night recently and I sure don't know why I was on Pinterest, but I came across this beautiful scarecrow...

And pooof.... the lightbulb came on!

I have 5 skeletons for this year (so far).  2 pose & stays and 3 not.
Miss Angela happens to do....5 different types of dance.

What if I borrow a costume from each type of dance for a skeleton and pose them in a corresponding manner??

SQUEEEEE!

She has several hundred costumes (OK, slight exaggeration, but her closet is filling up rapidly!) She does ballet, lyrical, tap, jazz & hiphop - and after 12 years, she's got quite a stash of threads.

I promised I wouldn't mess up her costumes (some of the competition ones have been recycled and used for multiple years) so in case of rain again, I may just dress them up the night before or day of  Halloween.....or I could pose them and just drape them with black creepy cloth?  Either one would work.
The 3 non-pose & stays will be a challenge, but between strategic fence posts and fishing string, I can make something work.  I plan to keep them all fairly close together, so they can support each other.

Love this idea!
I don't think I'll borrow the shoes, tho.  Have you every been around a dancer and her feet / shoes?  Those things are rotten!  I prefer not to mess with those.

Right as I found the scarecrow, the hubby showed me this - funny!
Hmm, I'm assuming an interior PVC frame to pose the arms?
The purple one cracks me up!

And this weekend......
I'm not all as pyscho crazy as some of those people on the Boney Bunch Love FB page (OMG, I can't wait!!!  I've been waiting for months!!  blah blah blah - get a life!!)  But I will go to the preview party and I'm sure to pick up a piece or three.  I like the lady with the wine glass and they also have a pet cemetery tart burner that looked interesting.  I don't like going to the mall, so this is one of the few things (other than teenage girl & friends) that will get me there willingly.

And what's up with this cool weather??  It feels like fall now and it's still a month til my birthday!

MGC took the plunge!

Maple Grove Cemetery is now on FaceBook!

I feel so in touch with social media and stuff!

Now to figure all this out - I thought making a new page would be idiot-proof.  Of course, I hate having anyone hanging over my shoulder when I'm on the computer and of course - King Geek of the World (aka the hubby) was right there watching.  It makes me nervous and my fingers forget how to type when someone is hovering!

Here is bowling pin  Buddha aka Chester to say hi!
