12 days - Haunted Hides

Have you ever Geocached?

Basically it's a high-tech treasure hunt using GPS to find actual tangible, but hidden, items (unlike Pokemon).  It's quite fun.  And now with smart phones, you don't even need special gear - you can install the Geocache app and go for it!   You'd be surprised at how many there are out there!

They even have Halloween-themed caches!  In fact there's one less than 1/2 mile from my house.  I might have to take the dog for a little walk later!
People hide a Tupperware container / ammo box / Altoids tin / whatever and create an entry on the website with  GPS coordinates and maybe a hint.  The containers can hold anything - but mainly a logbook that finders will sign & date (how better to prove you found it!) The finders search for it, sign the log then go back to the website and log their find for that cache.

Caches are rated 1 to 5 stars for difficulty to find and terrain.  People of all ages & abilities can do this (just make sure they understand that you don't have to follow the arrow on the GPS exactly, you can follow the nearby path instead of slogging thru a swamp - ask me about an early Spring afternoon a few years ago with a young Miss Angela!!)

Anyhoo.  I just learned about a different kind of cache!  It's called a Night Cache.  Perfect for these shorter days.   They use reflectors or glow-in-the dark ink to guide you to the location.

Seriously, how fun would this be??  You can look for any of the caches at night, but these are specifically for nighttime.  I'm sad since the closest one to me is 174 miles away!  There's none even in Michigan.  But maybe there's one near you!

Check out the links for more info.
